The Pilates boom is here—and it’s bigger than ever! Pilates is cool, Pilates is on trend.
In just the past two years, the Pilates landscape has completely transformed, not only in the UK but globally. Whether it’s the ‘cool factor,’ endorsements from stars like Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran, or people simply realising how amazing Pilates is, there’s no denying it: Pilates is now the go-to exercise for many.
And it’s not just the traditional method; Pilates is evolving into so many formats: classical, dynamic, HIIT, cardio, even monitor-based sessions, huge group classes, and plenty of new genres and fads popping up along the way. It’s an undeniable tsunami of Pilates. But, is it all Pilates? Well, that’s a big, potentially heated debate for another blog post! 😊
Whatever your take, one thing’s for sure: there’s a massive demand for Pilates instructors, and plenty of work out there. But what will set you apart as a teacher?
With the boom, new courses are popping up everywhere. Here are a few things worth considering when choosing the right one for you:
•Is this training from a credible source?
•Is this certification recognised and respected?
•Does it hold global accreditation?
•Does the course offer enough content on biomechanics?
•Are teaching methods like tactile, verbal, and visual skills well-covered?
•Will you be prepared to teach both 1:1 and group sessions?
•Is the course easy to follow and digest?
•Does it focus on safety?
•Is the content regularly updated?
•Are the materials useful and easy to follow?
•Do you have access to your educator or mentor during training?
It’s also a good idea to chat with your educator to get a feel for their teaching style. Even within the same schools, with the same curriculum, teaching styles can vary.
For me, choosing Balanced Body and becoming an educator for them was a natural fit because they ticked most of these boxes. They encourage us to teach in our own voices, and that’s exactly what I pass on to my students: find your own voice as a teacher.
In my experience, if course content is too rigid and over-prescribed, it can stifle creativity and limit a student’s ability to develop their own teaching style.
In summary, take your time when researching courses. Look into the background of the course and its educators, and if possible, have a conversation with them.
From my perspective, if the first question a potential student asks is, “How quickly can I complete this course?”—then we may not be the right fit. We’re not a shortcut to becoming an instructor. I take this course, and my students, seriously. My goal is to see my students succeed and thrive in their new careers!
